Trio of Walla Walla Grenaches
| (I wrote this already, Reddit deleted my draft, I couldn’t recreate the greatness.) Three really excellent Walla Walla (Columbia Valley) Grenaches. (1) Los Rocosos ($45). Small producer who models his business after a classic vigneron. He daily walks the vineyard, tending his plot and the fruit is really excellent. This wine spent 36 months in barrel and is soft and perfectly balanced. An excellent nose of red fruit, a slight tawny haze to the color, but otherwise ruby and light. Palate is ripe fruit and soft rocks funk. Beautiful easy finish. The maker fully destemmed the clusters, leaving very light tannins. (2) Rotie Cellars Little G ($65) Both Rotie wines are true Grenache drinker wines. 100% Grenache, aged entirely in neutral oak. (The wine maker is a huge Grenache fan, and his Grenache driven Rhône blends are excellent.) Little G is sourced from Devils gate vineyard. Soft ripe red fruit, a jammy sweetness and super balanced neutral oak vanilla tones. Complex enough to satisfy anyone, and approachable enough to pour for a first time wine drinker. (3) Rotie Cellars Big G ($65) Big G is a rocks district estate Grenache (the plot is literally next door to Bionic Wines). This wine is probably a bit young, and would benefit from a few more years of age. Loads of cherry and strawberry fruit leather, a medium bodied richness, and a warm and inviting earthiness typical of this AVA. [link] [comments] |
