Alonso & Pedrajo Suane 2019

When Konstantin Baum gave the 2017 Suañé 98 points in one of his videos it was obviously something we were intrigued to try! Not sure about availability in other markets, but in Europe at least the 2019 and 2020 vintages were fairly easy to find online.

Notes of baked apple, apricot, green olive, yeast, dried herbs with some leathery, oaky aromas too. Powerful, yet equally intricate and poised. Long and complex finish.

Perhaps what most struck me about this wine was the beautiful balance achieved by the winemakers with harmonious acidity keeping the wine fresh without overstepping the mark.

On the second day developed much more pronounced Sherry like qualities with brine, roasted nuts and a distinct savoury-umami character.

We couldn’t help but compare this to the 2018 Musar Blanc which tasted a few weeks earlier - while both are superb examples of top quality whites, for me the greater complexity of the Musar slightly edges this out.

Still, a marvellous wine, 93p.
